Sunny Bakery in San Gabriel is a Chinese bakery that has carved out a neat niche for those seeking authentic durian-based desserts alongside classic offerings. Located on a busy stretch of E Valley Blvd, the storefront is modest and can easily blend into the neighborhood’s bustling Asian dining and shopping scene, but the real draw sits inside the display cases.

Durian cakes and rolls are the bakery’s standout items, known among locals as a reliable spot to satisfy durian cravings without the need to travel overseas. The durian filling is fresh and well-balanced with the cake and cream, appealing to those who appreciate the fruit’s distinctive flavor but prefer it in a light, sweet presentation. Besides durian, they carry other fruit-fusion cakes, like chocolate with mango and strawberry, which work well for birthday celebrations or casual treats.

Custom cakes are available and seem to be a popular option for special occasions, but these require some planning; ordering at least a few days ahead is common practice. Expect custom creations to come at a noticeably higher price point compared to the standard cakes in the display, reflecting the care that goes into these personalized designs.

The service here is straightforward and practical—orders can be placed by phone, and payment methods focus on cash or digital options like Zelle and Venmo, which speaks to a more local and community-oriented approach rather than tourist-ready convenience. Parking, typical for San Gabriel Valley commercial zones, can be tight, so those planning a visit might want to carve out a little extra time.

Sunny Bakery works best for locals who already know what they want or those curious about durian desserts and willing to give something a bit different a try. Midday or early afternoon visits may be best to find the cake selections intact before they sell out. The bakery suits casual pick-ups, last-minute party cake runs, or a quick stop to grab a recognized durian specialty that’s hard to find in this part of Greater LA.

This bakery doesn't look like much from the outside. However, they make very tasty cakes. We've only tried the durian and chocolate so far. It seems like durian is what they're known for, so I recommend that. We also enjoyed a chocolate cake with mangos and strawberries for my birthday last night. They did a good job. A custom cake will set you back much more than the others in the case, though. I paid $70 for it! They also have the usual supply of Chinese buns. I've never actually eaten one from here. However, my mom likes their pork sung and taro ones!

Probably the best bakery for durian roll and cakes. The prices were not bad at all. For custom cakes, they recommended at least 3-days in advance. FYI, the bakery takes cash or zelle/venmo. No cc options.

The durian roll cake was delicious. The fresh durian filling in the middle is the highlight. Will definitely get more the next time I am in that area.

Only place I know of you can get a crowd pleaser durian cake. It is pricey but no one else sells that I am aware outside of Vietnam or Asia other parts. They take digital payment zelle venmo and easy to call phone in your order. They do sell out so best to call ahead order ahead. Support local family businesses! Parking Is of course an issue typical of any SGV retail but that is out of the control of the store.

One of the few bakeries in the greater LA area that I found that does durian cakes. The cake was good and looked super cute. They do a wide variety of custom cakes it looks like. Very pleased with my experience here. Food The durian cake had a good amount of durian filling in it and was super good overall! There was a good durian to cake ratio. There was a lot of cream on the outside but it was for decorative purposes and it looked really good. Overall very happy with the look and taste of the cake. Atmosphere A small bakery with a large selection of customizable and fun cakes! They have many models to look at and designs to choose from in a binder. Pricing A 6 inch durian shaped durian cake is $58. Pretty expensive for a 6 inch cake but it looks really good and looks bigger than 6 inches with the amount of cream put on it. In my opinion, worth it for that special person that loves durian. A 6 inch cake with durian filling is $28 for reference. Service Friendly staff and double checked to make sure was order was just right. The cake packaging was good enough to get it back home without any damage to it! Other If you pay with cash or Zelle then you can save on a 3% convenience fee! There is a parking lot for your convenience but many other shops share it.

Ordered 2 birthday cakes for here the first time. Cakes were reasonably price and taste great. Unfortunately the service was ok even a bit rude, like they don't care for your business. The don't offer much of a selection. If you like a more custom castle, they charge an outrageous price.
